What is the friar’s motive for wanting to slow down the marriage preparations for Paris and Juliet

At this point in the play, Romeo and Juliet are already married; however, the news of the marriage has yet to be revealed and is, thus, still secret.  As the friar most obviously knows of Romeo and Juliet being married, he knows that the wedding between Paris and Juliet is not possible.  This is why he slows the preparations for the wedding down.
