If the verb you are using is used to describe something that already happened (If you were already talking in past tense) then you have to use the past tense of the verb as well. On occasion it is acceptable to say something like "After lunch, we went running." This is because your verb is the whole phrase "went running" and the word "went" is already in past tense.
