How did the discovery of the electron change the Atomic Model?

The discovery of the electron (by JJ Thomson) changed scientists then current notion of an atom being one solid, homogeneous object. The model of this is shown in the "plum-pudding" model where electrons were just mixed in with the rest of the atom stuff like fruit in a pudding.
