On June 26 1996, in a 7-1 decision,
the Supreme Court struck down the age-long male-only admission policy of the Virginia
Military Institute (VMI); their decision was that both male and female students
be eligible for admission into the institute. As
of that time, Virginia Military Institute was the only single-sex institution
of higher learning in Virginia.
