sum of a number and 3: x + 3
Six times the sum of a number and 3: 6(x+3)
12 less than 12 times the number: 12x - 12
so equation

6(x+3) = 12x - 12
6x + 18 = 12x - 12
12x - 6x = 18 + 12
6x = 30
  x = 5
