Immediately after the flash of lightning, the air cools and contracts quickly. This rapid expansion and contraction creates the sound wave that we hear as thunder. This temperature change from sometimes over 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit to regular temperatures can cause sound waves that exceed 200 dB.
