What does the term secede mean As it pertained to the South in the 1800's?

Secede means to withdraw from a union. This was a very common word used in the 1800's. Hope this helps you! I just took a test about this.

In the south as the civil war starts boiling, there are states that "secede", meaning that they left the U.S. to start their own country. Secede basically means to withdraw or leave a group, community etc.
