When the goal of an artist is representation of objects in the real world, conventions are commonly used, which is known as depiction. The artist is depicting, or rather transferring whatever he or she sees in the real world onto the paper/canvas in order to create a realistic and vivid image. There are various techniques as to how this can be done, but it all depends on the artist.
