Why did industry develop slowly in the south??

The south is agricultural based and depends with the slaves for production. The South is better known for its cotton industry. Their money comes from the trade in cotton which they produced. The railroad construction did not give much impact with the way they live. The use of slaves has been a part of their lives and living.
