They have little things at the ends that are almost like sensors that detect and analyze what you're supposed to feel and they send a signal to you brain to tell you how to react.

the nervous system takes in information through our senses, processes the information, and triggers reactions.

for example, if you touch a hot plate, you reflexively pull back your hand. Your nerves simultaneously send pain signals to your brain.
