Like terms are numbers that are... well alike. For example 2x and 4x are like terms because they the x in common. But 2x is NOT like terms with 4xy because even though 4xy has an x, it also has a y which is not a part of 2x. Hope this clears it up a bit and if not please reach out so I can explain it more.
