let    pickle bought by alexa =x

then according to given condition ,

pickle bought by Tom= (1/3) of Alexa

pickle bought by Tom= (1/3) x

hence also given

totall pickle cost = Tom cost + alexa cost = 56p

(1/3)x+x=56

taking L.C.M

(4/3)x=56

x=56*3/4

x=42 p

so it means,

Alexa cost = x = 42p

Tom cost = (1/3)x= (1/3)*42 = 14 p
