How is the relationship between the American Colonies and Britain similar to that of McDonald's franchises?

McDonald's has stores in all kinds of territories across several countries in the world like the British Empire had colonies in places like the Americas and India.  Individual McDonald's stores cannot do their own thing, buy a different fryer or use a different recipe.  They are required to follow protocol that goes up a chain of command of managers up to the CEO of McDonald's which would be the King of England in this case. This a funny correlation to make.
