Why was the Church the final authority with regard to knowledge during the Middle Ages?

In the middle ages, most people (unless you were a monk, nun, ect) were illiterate, and relied on the church for information and laws. People then were devoutly Catholic/Christian so people's trust in the Church was strong (until the protestant revolution).
