Explanation: at the start, carbon has 4 and oxygen has 6. After the bond, C has 5 and O has 7. But using one covalent bond does not support the octet rule so you have to change things up. To satisfy the octet, you have to use a triple bond, and a triple bond means Carbon and Oxygen share 6 electrons.
