Context clues is the strategy of using the surrounding text to figure out the meaning of a word. Example: Susan felt meloncholy, she cried all day. Even if you don't know the meaning of the word 'meloncholy', you know that she's sad if she cried all day.

Etymology is understanding of the history or orgin of a word. Example if you know that a word originated from (England, Greece) it can help determine the meaning.
