Discussion:

(f-g)(x) = f(x) - g(x) by definition. In our case this becomes

(f-g)(x) =   f(x)          -  g(x)

          =    (x^2 +1)    - (5 - x)  

         =     x^2 +x + (1-5)

        =     x^2 + x - 4
