The new inventions that made skyscrapers possible were the elevator and the development of a steel frame.

Before these inventions were made, the tallest buildings only have the usual 5 floors or stories. If it were not for these inventions, humanity would not be able to build some of the tallest skyscrapers today such the Burj Khalifa and the Shanghai Tower.
